Sustained Investigation
2021-2022

How does the design of a page relate to the emotional and intellectual interpretations of the written content?

In order to explore design concepts, I have created the full layout plan for a faux fashion magazine that I created called "Piano Woman." Each spread is inspired by a different iconic 1970's song. The investigation is meant to further my understanding of communications design in relation to content, and how the design of a page can affect how our brains interpret the content on both intellectual and emotional levels.

"Respect" Aretha Franklin Spread

Before Revisions:

I started this spread with the idea of making it a fashion spread that focused around a specific theme of clothing, and I combined that idea with the desire to make a spread honoring Aretha Franklin, one of the most influential faces in music history. I also wanted to explore texture, because it’s something I’ve wanted to work on as an artist lately.

As seen, I began with only making one page, because the original idea was to have all clothing ideas based on Aretha’s style, but I later revised the piece to include her face and some of her songs in text form. I think making this piece into a spread added a lot to the composition and how the piece draws the eye around the page. I also changed the stagnant red boxes into a more flowy, swirly pattern in order to add some movement to the piece and tie it together a bit more.

Overall, I really enjoyed creating this piece and I like how it turned out a lot. If I did it over I would want to find a way to make the “Respect” title go behind her head as it is without the bottom half being completely obscured. The organization on the right page could also be a little bit more thought out, but I hope that by adding the right page the organization was balanced out.
